Congratulations on downloading Farming!. These instructions should cover the basics of play. It even includes cheats for those of you who can't beat this unbelievably easy game. First of all, Farming1 is the main executable. From it, you can access all of the file handling features of the game. Selecting New starts a new game. Be warned that it will erase your saved data. Open loads a game. A real pro can beat Farming! in just one sitting, but you can keep on improving your save and making it infinitely better, so the save/load feature is definitely a good thing to have. Link is another neat little feature that requires a calculator to calculator link cable. It gets data from another calculator and replaces your saved game with your friend's save. Setup is essential if you want the graphics to look perfect. It sets the window coordinates so that everything done in graphics mode can be correctly shown. Credits shows you who made the game and Delete deletes your saved data. Got it? Good, now we can move on to the game itself!
During the new game process, the CPU will ask you for your name. Press 2nd, then Alpha, and a cursor that looks like an A will appear. You can now type in your name. Upon entering the game, there is a 12% chance that the first turn, you will be faced with taxes (they happen randomly). If you pay your taxes, the feds will deduct 50% of your money. If you don't, there is a 50% chance that they won't notice. If they do, they'll take away all of your money and property. If this happens, I recommend that you start over, as a fresh new game is far superior to the one that you get after the feds bust you. Of course, it can prove a real challenge to a Farming! expert to reconstruct the farm after being busted. There is also a 4% chance that a county fair will come, but you can't participate in it until you have a cow. When you do get a cow, there is a 20% chance that it will win. There is nothing to lose from showing your cow, so you definitely want to participate if you have one. Just like taxes, county fairs are entirely random. The prize for winning is 100 bucks. That should cover random events. The main game menu should read "Farm" at the top. Status shows you how much money you have, what crops you have, and how much more money you'll need to reach your 1000 dollar goal. There are several ways to get money. You can buy and sell crops and livestock using the Buy and Sell menus, and when you sell them, they should retail for roughly 150% of what you bought them for. Then, there is an option called Race. You can bet on either Babe or Gourdy, and each one has an equal chance of winning. Your maximum bet is 100 dollars, and you can't bet any more money than you own. There is an awesome cheat for the race that can really make you rich, which I will cover later. Moving down the menu, Town allows you to go to the big city. You can see how much your property is worth at the bank, and if you're new to Farming!, some experienced farmers in the bar can offer you some first time hints. Select Farm to go back to the Farm menu. Below Town is Helper. It normally takes you three turns to harvest all of your crops, but by paying the wonder man 10 dollars, he'll harvest all three plots of land in one turn! Finally, Menu allows you to go to the file handling menu.
Now for the fun part: the cheats! I only recommend these for those of you who either find Farming! incredibly difficult, or who have already beaten it. A great cheat to use can be entered from within Farming!. Go to the Race. Bet on either pig, but instead of betting just any number, bet a negative one. Though the CPU is programmed to look for bets that are too high, it doesn't look for ones that are too low. So, if you bet -101 dollars, the computer won't care, whereas it would if you bet 101. What good is this cheat? Well, if you lose the race, you gain the absolute value of the negative number that you entered. So, you can get 9E99 dollars from just one race! If you go over 9E99 dollars, the TI-83 will give you an overflow error. Another way to cheat is by exiting Farming!, and editing the variables that make up the saved games. A is money, B is plot one, C is plot two, and D is plot three. When editing the plots, 1 is corn, 2 is beans, 3 is wheat, 4 is cow, 5 is pig, and 6 is chick. The code for the ultimate save would be: 9E99->A:4->B:4->C:4->D. That gives you maximum money and a cow in every plot. That pretty much covers the cheats. But wait! One more cheap trick! If you are fed up with taxes, when the feds come, just turn off your TI-83, and turn it back on again. There is and 88% chance that the feds will be gone, and you'll still have your money.
